Story plan

My music video will follow the perspective of Jac Benton in the emergence of a new internet trend – the physical cover up of emotion using masks with smiles on them. It would become ‘popular’ due to the ability to always ‘appear happy’, and the video would start showing Jac Benton without a mask, headphones in and on his phone, watching other groups interact and stare at him (implying the lack of mask as the problem). It would follow him on his journey home, using lip syncing to link his identity as the artist to the video, and he would encounter a couple of different groups as he travels before he’s shown at home, where he opens a delivery that reveals he has bought a mask to conform to the expectations. This entire journey would be punctuated throughout with different scenes from social medias, such as YouTube videos or Instagram posts where masks are unboxed, different stylings are shown or artistic photos or photos with friends. Snapchat would also be used to show more personal m...

Draft treatment

My music video to Jon Bellion’s the Internet is a small production aiming to highlight the problems of attitudes and behaviours toward trends and social expectations. The story would include aspects of social media in sharing my trend and the way people then enforce it both within and outside of the realms of the internet. The equipment needed for filming would mainly be a phone – this would work w...

Statement of intent

My music video for ‘The Internet’ will protest the society and expectations set by social media, and how it is frowned upon to show negative emotions when we pick and choose which parts of ourselves to show online. I’m planning to use the idea of masks designed with smiles on them being introduced as a trend so that the image of happiness is constantly upheld and physically shown transferring into the everyday mentality of the internet generation. My two social groups would be the different sides of society, separated by their roles in spreading this mass culture, with one side being the producers (influencers that build the idea online) and the other being consumers (those that then start to enforce the expectation offline), however different groups within that will be shown such as male versus female interpretation. I’m planning to use different social media to portray my idea, so a few locations will be inside influencer homes showing off the product, and others will be outside, p...
